As part of the 5th Astana Economic Forum, Nursultan Nazarbayev has also held some bilateral meetings with businessmen and representatives of international organizations and scientists namely Nobel Prize laureates. The President of Kazakhstan highlighted that it was necessary to review the global financial architecture. Nobel Prize laureate in economics Robert Mundell also supports the idea advanced by Nursultan Nazarbayev concerning the introduction of a new supranational currency.
In particular, Mr. Mundell said the Kazakh president is a very interesting man who is constantly generating new ideas. He added that he really liked the Kazakh President’s innovative idea of a universal and common Eurasian currency. The Nobel Prize holder said he understood that it would not be that easy to achieve it practice, but if it did it would be a great solution to many problems.”
Also at the meeting, the sides discussed the gaps between technologically developed and developing countries. In this respect, scientists also agreed with the Kazakh leader that innovation was the main aspect in the competition between economies. Therefore, Kazakhstan is strictly following the policy of diversification and industrialisation, which will allow the country to dispose of its dependence on raw materials.
Nobel Prize Winners in Economics Christopher Pissarides said it was his first visit to Kazakhstan. Even though he had heard about the country’s achievements before, he saw it all in practice and was still surprised by the success of the state. He thinks it is right that Kazakhstan, accumulating oil revenues, sends them to other ways of development namely education, science and innovative modernisation of the economy.
Nursultan Nazarbayev also had a meeting with the Chairman, Chief Executive Officer of Exxon Mobil Corporation, Rex Tillerson, as well as representatives of such international organisations as the UN, WTO and the International Monetary Fund. Also on the grounds of the 5th Astana Economic Forum, the Kazakh President discussed the issues of copyright protection with Francis Gurry, the Director General of the World Intellectual Property Organisation. At a meeting with the ex-president of the Federal Republic of Germany Horst Koehler, Nursultan Nazarbayev scrutinised the issues of global and regional economy and the sides also exchanged views on the current political situation in the world.
