March 12, 2014

The president of Kazakhstan and Russia, Nursultan Nazarbayev and Vladimir Putin, discussed over the telephone some pressing problems on the international agenda – including the recent developments in Ukraine, the Kazakh president’s press office says in a press release.

“Nursultan Nazarbayev said that Kazakhstan, as strategic partner, had an understanding of Russia’s position on defending the rights of the national minorities in Ukraine as well as its security interests,” the press release says.

Nazarbayev said he hoped that all concerned sides would show restraint and resolve the situation through negotiations as soon as possible.
The Kazakh president said that the Ukrainian crisis should be resolved peacefully in accordance with the principle of national sovereignty and in compliance with the international law.
